Statue of sphinx found in southern Egypt

Archaeologists in southern Egypt have come across a statue of a sphinx in the ruins of a temple. The discovery was made in Dendera, about 450 kilometers south of Cairo.

According to the archaeologists, the statue dates from Roman times, because they also found some inscriptions from that time. They think the Sphinx was made during the reign of Emperor Claudius, who Romanized large parts of southern Egypt.

This sphinx is a lot smaller than the famous sphinx of Giza, which is 20 meters high. The sphinx in Giza is also more than 2000 years older. The Egyptians hope that this new find will attract more tourists to the country.
