Station friends Waregem keep rooster crowing alive
The roosters are placed in a row in typical rooster troughs next to each other at café ‘t Gavereke. The English bantam rooster that crows the most in one hour wins.
The sport itself has been around since before the Second World War, but the number of participants is decreasing visibly. Nevertheless, cock setting is still practiced weekly from September to March by associations in Kanegem, Kortemark and Ardooie.
“We want to breathe new life into use with this setting,” says Bernard De Lange. In Waregem there is even a small museum with documents from the 1960s, when Hanan setting was still popular.
