The Frisian-speaking Fedde Dijkstra did not know what he was experiencing when he continued to speak in Dutch to an ING employee in Leeuwarden with an obvious Frisian accent.
Dijkstra is known as a Frisian interpreter. He heard – to his surprise – that bank employees are only allowed to speak Dutch or English. This has to do with the fact that conversations can be listened to and not everyone speaks or understands Frisian.
Ridiculous, says Dijkstra. On the telephone he spoke stiffly in Frisian, the bank employee continued to speak in Dutch. What do you think? Should it be possible to speak to authorities in Frisian, Groningen or Drenthe? Or is it better to stick to Dutch in this case?
