Statement of the day | Winter or all-season tires should be mandatory in the Netherlands

Due to the frost, it is slipping and sliding on Dutch roads again. Should winter or all-season tires be mandatory to limit damage?

A third of motorists in the Netherlands already drive on winter tires. About 10 percent have all-season tires on their cars. But are they really necessary? Opinions differ on this.

They are indeed safer on snowy roads. In addition, winter tires perform better than summer tires in cold weather thanks to their flexible rubber. This starts at temperatures below 7 degrees.

In the snow you have more grip on winter tires. But do you also experience less damage? The largest car leasing company in the Netherlands, Lesaseplan, reported several years ago that its customers caused just as much damage on winter tires as on summer tyres. It was suggested that this may be because people take more risks on winter tires.

In countries where more snow falls, such as Germany and Switzerland, people with winter tires experience less damage. In Germany and Austria, winter tires are already mandatory in winter conditions.
