Statement of the day | There should be a national fireworks ban

More and more municipalities want a national fireworks ban, but what do the Dutch themselves want?

Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht are in favor of a fireworks ban and have already advocated a national ban several times. “This provides more clarity to residents, sellers and enforcers” and is therefore more effective, says The Hague mayor Jan van Zanen.

A spokesperson for the municipality of Zoetermeer indicated that he is not against fireworks, but is concerned about “the damage and injury caused by improper handling of fireworks.” That is why they are also positive about a national fireworks ban.

Municipalities that are against a national fireworks ban believe that lighting fireworks is a tradition that should be disturbed as little as possible. A national fireworks ban is also met with little enthusiasm from PVV, NSC, BBB and VVD. “National regulations still do not make it enforceable,” said BBB MP Henk Vermeer.
