Statement of the day | The care for children and paid work must be better divided between partners

Fathers and mothers still find it difficult to distribute paid work and care for the children equally, according to a survey by Statistics Netherlands.

The biennial Emancipation Monitor once again shows that fathers and mothers still have a hard time distributing paid work and care for the children equally.

Although 60 percent of fathers and mothers indicate that they want to tackle the tasks together equally, the research shows that this almost never succeeds. In practice, not even one in ten couples manage to divide paid work and care for the children equally.

It also appears that mothers still spend more time caring for their children than fathers. Even if they have a paid job. Slightly less than half of the women reduce their working hours after the birth of their first child, or stop working altogether.
