Statement of the day | Shelters must check the income of prospective owners

Owners are increasingly unable to pay for their pets. Should animal shelters therefore check whether people earn enough before they can adopt a pet?

The Who Fills My Box Foundation has a collection and distribution point in Stadskanaal where people can apply for free food for their pets. “People in need, they are desperate for food for their animals. More and more are reporting,” according to Alex Westra. He has been a volunteer there for nine years.

An important condition for the free feed is that people are not allowed to adopt new animals. However, that rule is sometimes broken. “Those people are immediately put on the blacklist,” said Westra. Should people therefore be better screened before they are allowed to adopt a new pet?

What do you think, should shelters check the income of future owners? Or is it people’s own responsibility? Share your opinion by participating in the Statement of the Day.
