And again there was a death on the provincial road N34, this time near Zuidlaren. It is not yet clear what the cause of this fatal accident was. But it is clear that something has to be done on this death road.
In the coming years, the province of Drenthe will invest almost 40 million euros in making roads safer. The N34 falls outside this, when the plans for the improvement of that road are ready, a separate budget will be created for this. But then it must first become clear what the best way is to improve safety on this and other 100-kilometer roads.
Doubling the De Punt – Emmen route is an option. A speed limit is another possibility. But then the road must be adjusted, because the current appearance invites you to drive fast. And anyone who ignores a solid line probably doesn’t care much about a speed limit either.
Adding ridges or other obstacles to make it impossible for cars to cross the central lane is also one of the proposals. Now there is only a green band and a continuous line between the two lanes, indicating that overtaking is not a good idea. But yes… Those who are hiding behind a tractor can ignore those stripes…
