Statement of the day | Nuisance caused by wind farms should fall under criminal law

Local residents have been complaining for two and a half years about a penetrating hum around the 35 wind turbines along the N33 between Meeden and Wildervank.

The health complaints caused by the humming sound do not seem to count. Nevertheless, the perpetrators can go ahead for the time being. That is remarkable, writes Johan de Veer in his commentary in DVHN.

He points out that the arrival of the wind farm has caused a lot of controversy and that emotions were running high during that period. Then action was taken. ‘Activists were accused of spreading asbestos on the site of the wind farm planned at the time. They would have endangered public health by doing so.’

According to De Veer, it would be good not to apply double standards and ‘to investigate legally whether the production of wind energy in this part of the Groningen peat colonies is jeopardizing public health.’

What do you think, do wind producers endanger public health if they operate turbines that cause health problems? And should such nuisance caused by a wind farm fall under criminal law?
