Statement of the day | National vaccination program should be mandatory for all children in daycare centers

The vaccination rate in the Netherlands is alarmingly low. It is raising concerns among healthcare professionals, who fear outbreaks of diseases we thought had been eradicated. Is a mandatory national vaccination program for all children in daycare centers a solution?

Marcel Verweij is professor of medical ethics at Utrecht University. His proposal: establish a national lower limit of 90 percent vaccination rate. If that minimum is not reached, there should be consequences for families who refuse vaccinations.

“If you are below that limit, pressure will be applied. Such as making participation in the national vaccination program mandatory for all children in daycare centers,” says Verweij.
