Statement of the day | Municipal councils must consist of half of women

Women are still in the minority in municipal councils: 35 percent. Should half of this parliament consist of women?

According to local female politicians, it is important that more women become politically active, so that everyone feels represented. Moreover, women view some issues differently.

“Our councilors are fantastic men, but they proposed building a tunnel. When a female councilor asked whether they had considered that women might not feel safe in such a tunnel, you could see that they thought: oh yes,” says Sandra Alberts of the VVD in Assen.

What do you think? Should political parties be obliged to put more women on the list for the composition of the municipal council? Or is that something each party has to figure out for itself? Let us know and participate in the statement of the day.
