There is a major shortage of housing in the Netherlands. Should local residents nevertheless be taken into account when building new houses? Or is the housing shortage so great that construction must be done as quickly as possible?
The horseshoe factory in Helpman-Noord will soon make way for 83 stacked social rental homes and 56 private sector rental apartments. The replacement new construction is a shock to local residents.
Ida van der Weij will soon live right in the new complex. She has problems with the dark stone and feels unheard. “Was there a moment when I was asked for my opinion? No!”
According to councilor Rik van Niejenhuis, we need more affordable housing quickly. “We are not only looking at major construction plans in and around the city. We will seize opportunities to utilize space that becomes available in the current neighborhoods with both hands.”
