Statement of the day | Graduation party is the time to let go of your child

The vast majority of final exam students received good news on Wednesday: passed. A series of graduation parties will follow. Which presents parents with dilemmas. Because what can your child do? And what don’t you allow?

Alcohol is a hot topic. A large proportion of the successful students are not yet 18 and are therefore officially not allowed to drink a drop. The same applies to all kinds of other temptations, such as nitrous oxide or drugs.

“If we just ban everything, the tendency is greater to do it secretly,” says psychologist and parenting coach Joyce Akse in an article about this subject. “Parents should realize: you can never prevent things like this with 100 percent certainty. It can go wrong sometime. The most important thing is that as a parent you do not point the finger of blame.”

Her advice: be open and start the conversation beforehand. “Explain the risks, outline what the consequences could be and say: if it does happen, come to me.

What do you think? Can you ban final exam candidates from drinking at exam parties? Or is the graduation party just the right time to let go of your child? Respond to our statement of the day.
