Statement of the day | Giving colleagues three kisses for New Year’s is no longer fashionable these days

We all know it: the New Year’s kiss. For years it was the ‘norm’ to give female colleagues three kisses to wish them a happy New Year, but is that still relevant today?

In recent years, three kisses on the first working day of the new year have become increasingly less common. According to etiquette and image expert Anne-Marie van Leggelo, this has two causes: the corona crisis and the MeToo movement. “Many forms of greeting have been added and accepted. So nowadays you can also say: I don’t kiss,” says Van Leggelo.

On the other hand, giving three kisses on the first working day of the new year has been the ‘norm’ for a long time, and you cannot easily change that. Lilian Woltering, expert in the field of business etiquette, believes that New Year’s kisses are part of it. “See it as an opportunity to have a nice moment with colleagues,” she says.
