With the House of Representatives elections around the corner, election boards with posters are also appearing again. Do they still make sense?
A small political uprising broke out in the municipality of Westerwolde because the municipal council initially did not want to install the signs. The city council forced a number to be installed after all.
PvdA member Wim Eilert, one of the rebellious politicians, is happy with that. “Also because I think that election signs still play an important role. In the sense that they encourage people to vote,” says Eilert.
Kees Aarts, professor of political science at the State University, thinks the signs are old-fashioned. “They do no harm, but they are mainly a remnant of a time that no longer exists,” he says.
