Statement of the day | Dutch must again become the working language at universities

Universities will also offer all major bachelor’s programs in Dutch. Universities presented this on Thursday morning as part of their ‘self-management plan’, with which they want to limit the influx of international students.

Figures from Universities of the Netherlands (UNL) show that 31 percent of the bachelor’s intake is international. Moreover, 30 percent of all bachelor’s programs are taught entirely in English.

The fourteen Dutch universities will now add a Dutch-language variant to all major bachelor’s programs. In addition, they will make an inventory of which English bachelor’s programs can be fully converted into Dutch.

Do you think this is a justified choice? Should Dutch become the language of instruction at universities again? Give your opinion and respond to our Statement of the day.
