Statement of the day | Drinking less throughout the year is better than going without alcohol for a month

Many Dutch people start the year with an alcohol-free month. But does that make sense if you then continue as before?

Dry January is popular as a good resolution. To start the year fit, we are switching en masse to healthy juices and non-alcoholic beers. But after such a sober month, participants often long for a drink and a party.

Does such an alcohol-free month really make sense? Not if you fall into your old pattern, scientists say. However, Dry January can increase awareness among drinkers. You will quickly notice the positive consequences of quitting alcohol, such as weight loss and a better night’s sleep. The idea is that people therefore adjust their drinking behavior.

What do you think? Does Dry January make sense? Or would it be better to drink less all year round? Let us know and participate in the Statement of the Day.
