Statement of the day | Council members are required to participate in municipal council meetings

Suppose you are elected as a municipal councilor. You receive compensation, 1668.76 euros per month, but never show up at council meetings. Should that be possible?

This is currently happening in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, where councilor Nette Kruzenga sits on the council on behalf of BBB-LMG (BBBondgenoot van Leefbaar Midden Groningen). She is the only member of that party, because the other five council members split from her.

Kruzenga has been absent from council meetings for the past three months. She doesn’t want to say too much about why, she sticks to ‘private circumstances’. She does say that the atmosphere in the council chamber plays a role.

A return is not possible for the time being, because Kruzenga plans to take a sabbatical of another four months. According to the politician, it is time for ‘reflection’.

What do you think, should this be possible? Or should you, as a representative, be obliged to participate in council meetings? Let us know and participate in the Statement of the Day.
