Statement of the day | Christmas markets must be extra secured

The National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security (NCTV) increased the threat level this week. There is fear of attacks. Do Christmas markets need extra security?

The threat level was raised on Tuesday from level 3 (significant) to level 4. This means that the chance of an attack in the Netherlands is ‘real’. Measures have already been taken at Christmas markets in Limburg and Twente. More security guards, more cameras, bag checks, concrete barriers.

Schools in Enschede have decided to cancel the planned outings to Christmas markets in Germany, on the other hand, the Dickens Festijn in Deventer will continue with normal security. Because it is already at a “very high level”, according to the municipality, there is nothing more to add.

What do you think: should Christmas markets in Drenthe and Groningen take measures? By providing extra security or canceling Christmas markets here and perhaps not crossing the border for the Christmas markets? Let us know.
