Statement of the day | Breeding cats with short snouts is animal cruelty

Veterinarians and animal welfare organizations such as Dier&Recht are sounding the alarm: cats with a short snout suffer seriously from their appearance.

Since 2014, there has been a ban in the Netherlands on breeding animals that suffer from their appearance. The NVWA has recently also enforced this ban. For example, several French bulldog breeders have been fined because the dogs had a snout that was too short. A Chihuahua breeder was also recently fined: the parent animals did not meet the legal guidelines and suffered from their small heads and bulging eyes.

Although there are clear breeding rules for dogs, there are none yet for cats. Yet veterinarians regularly see cats in their practice with complaints due to their appearance.
