Statement of the day: At the National Commemoration we should also consider the war in Ukraine

Wednesday is the day of National Remembrance, called Remembrance Day by most people. Originally, only Dutch soldiers and resistance fighters who died in World War II were commemorated on this occasion.

That has changed over the decades. Now it is standing still, so it is explained on the site of the National Committee 4 and 5 May to all – civilians and military personnel – who have been killed or murdered in the Kingdom of the Netherlands or anywhere else in the world since the outbreak of the Second World War, in war situations and in peace operations in which the Netherlands was involved.

Strictly speaking, this only concerns conflicts in which the Netherlands was militarily involved. In the light of the tragic war in Ukraine, do you think that is justified?
