The Grand Prix of Saudi Arabia will be held at the Jeddah circuit on Sunday. It would have been close if the race hadn’t taken place.
Rebels from neighboring Yemen on Friday carried out attacks with missiles and drones during training. After an explosion, a huge cloud of smoke could be seen from the race track. One of the rockets was fired at a complex of state oil company Saudi Aramco. That is about 10 kilometers away from the Jeddah circuit.
Despite the threatening situation, Formula 1 director Stefano Domenicali announced a few hours after the attacks that the race would continue as normal. There was no deviation from that position, not even after discussions with concerned drivers and team bosses. Not everyone was reassured. For example, TV analyst and former driver Ralf Schumacher left Saudi Arabia to analyze the race at home from Germany.
“If it’s really an attack, I’m really surprised what everyone is still doing here. Then you have to pack all your stuff and leave, right?” Schumacher told international media. Should the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix have been canceled after the rocket attacks?
