The old Groningen ring road should be given a place in the new Zuiderplantsoen via a so-called ‘Memory Balcony’. Local residents are opposed to that plan and want to get rid of the concrete picket fences as quickly as possible. Respond to the statement of the day: A reminder of the Groningen ring road is a valuable addition to the Zuiderplantsoen.
The municipality of Groningen wants to leave a part of the current elevated ring road measuring thirty by seven meters and 5 meters high. Partly painted in red and brightened with green, it would become a reminder of the almost 60 years that the road cut through the Oosterpoort district. The artwork is described as a Memory Balcony.
Petition
That idea did not sit well with local residents. They are one petition started to change the city council’s mind. They say that there is nothing beautiful to discover about the current road on stilts, and they would rather not be reminded of that.
Honor your own history?
What do you think. Should Groningen respond to the wishes of local residents and completely demolish the old ring road? Or does that go too far. The city should honor its recent history by preserving something of the old ring road. Respond to the statement of the day: A reminder of the Groningen ring road is a valuable addition to the Zuiderplantsoen.
