Statement of the day | A maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour must apply within built-up areas

Many municipalities and also Veilig Verkeer Nederland (VVN) are strongly in favor of a maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour in built-up areas. Experts believe that dozens of deaths and serious injuries will be less regrettable as a result of the measure.

In the autumn of 2020, the House of Representatives passed a motion in which it was agreed that 30 kilometers per hour would become the standard norm within built-up areas. And the police are also happy with initiatives for a lower speed. Still, lowering the maximum speed from 50 to 30 kilometers per hour seems easier said than done.

“You have to tackle roads and get the speed out. Making it as unattractive as possible for motorists to press the accelerator pedal on these roads. Only then will something happen. So thresholds, windings, road narrowings and other speed-reducing measures,” said Rob Stomphorst of VVN a few days ago.

Adjustments cost a lot of money

That’s where the shoe pinches. All those adjustments cost a lot of money and many municipalities will struggle with that. What do you think? Should safety be invested after all so that the maximum speed within built-up areas is reduced from 50 to 30 kilometers per hour?
