State Secretary Vijlbrief displeased with further delays at the Zuidbroek nitrogen plant

The construction of a nitrogen plant to make foreign gas suitable for Dutch consumption has been delayed by another month.

The construction of a nitrogen plant to make foreign gas suitable for Dutch consumption has been delayed by another month. A very displeased State Secretary Hans Vijlbrief (Mining) reports this to the House of Representatives. He has summoned the parties involved to address them about their “unprofessional working method”.

South pants

The nitrogen plant in Zuidbroek should make it possible to definitively end gas extraction in Groningen. At the moment, the gas field is still on the pilot flame position, with the installations kept ready for use in case a very cold winter makes extra production necessary.

The fact that the plant has been delayed again and can only be partially commissioned in February 2023 does not mean that additional gas extraction from the Groningen field will be required in the coming months. But Vijlbrief takes the matter seriously. “The completion of the construction of the nitrogen plant has a very high priority for me,” said the minister.

GTS summoned

Client GTS has therefore been called to account, as have the main contractor and the subcontractor of the project. They should come and give an explanation next week. “I want the disputes between the three parties to be resolved,” said Vijlbrief.
