State Secretary in Eexterveen teaches students to be in charge of their money

In ‘the week of money’, schools want to teach students how to deal with money. For this reason, State Secretary Aukje de Vries of Finance is giving a guest lesson to groups 7 and 8 of OBS de Kameleon in Eexterveen.

“I think it’s important because managing money well is an important lesson that they can build on,” says De Vries. “You can just see that there are many temptations and advertisements in games and Tiktok and that awareness is crucial. That is why I like to invest time in that.”

Most children have a savings goal, but saving is sometimes difficult. The digital life of young people is full of pitfalls and decoys, such as micro-transactions in computer games. Or influencers who promote products on social media, but it is not immediately clear that it is advertising.

According to the State Secretary, the children in Eexterveen are already well informed. “I think that parents have an important role in knowing what their children are doing when it comes to TikTok or games. The school management also indicated that they involve and inform parents.”

So the children are doing well, De Vries has a tip for everyone else. “It is important that children are aware of temptations in games and Tiktok that you do not immediately notice. I think that is an important lesson, because before you know it you have lost a lot of money.”
