The patience of the avid hiker has been put to the test, but the time has finally come: the Four Days Marches has officially started. March leader Henny Sackers gave the starting signal at the Wedren at 4 a.m. sharp, with which 38,000 walkers started their walking march in phases this morning.

First up are the walkers who cover a distance of 50 kilometers. Between 04:45 and 06:30 the walkers who cover a route of 40 kilometers start and from 06:45 and 08:00 the group that runs 30 kilometers will start.

The first March day of the Four Days Marches 2022 will be hot, with temperatures of around 30 degrees in the afternoon. Four-day meteorologist Jules Geirnaerdt expects a higher level of humidity. That means sweating and there is a risk of dehydration, warns exercise physiologist Maria Hopman. “In these weather conditions it remains important to drink a lot, but also to continue to eat well, even after the finish at the Wedren.”

Pink Wednesday

On Wijchen Day, also known as Pink Wednesday, participants head west through the Land van Maas en Waal. From there, the walkers walk through the green polders and across the market square of Wijchen.

‘It’s not a Three Days’

The start of the four-day walking tour has been postponed by one day this year due to the high temperatures. ‘There was no other decision possible’, a disappointed Sackers said earlier. Dozens of participants decided to start on Tuesday night. ‘It’s not a Three Days’.

This year the 104th edition of the Four Days Marches will take place. It is the first time in years that the event has not been fully booked with participants in the walking tour .
