Status: 07/15/2022 9:50 p.m

The first day of competition at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene is underway. With a lot of luck, high jumper Mateusz Przybylko reached the final of the top twelve, Tobias Potye was eliminated. Hammer thrower Tristan Schwandke fared no better. Later there are three medal decisions – in walking also with German participation. The overview of today’s competition events.

In the high jump qualifier on Friday (07/15/2022), Leverkusen’s Mateusz Przybylko had to tremble to the last jumper – only then was it clear that he jumped 2.25 m enough to make it into the final of the top twelve. “I had the feeling that I could jump higher. There’s more to it,” said the 2018 European champion in the sports show. Eleven jumpers jumped 2.28 m in the qualification. The 30-year-old Przybylko goes into the World Championship final with a personal best of 2.30 m. Tobias Potye from Munich, who only jumped 2.21 m in the qualification, will not be there.

Hammer throw: Schwandke only manages 72.87 m

In the hammer throw qualification, Tristan Schwandke from TV Hindelang did not make it into the final of the twelve best throwers with his best attempt (72.87 m) and as a total of 22nd. The 30-year-old German runner-up had been nominated for the World Championships at short notice and entered the competition as an outsider with a best performance of 75.25 m and a best performance of 76.71 m.

Tristan Schwandke has already thrown the hammer 75.25 m this season.

The best thrower in the qualification was defending champion Pawel Fajdek from Poland (80.09 m). Olympic champion Wojciech Nowicki (79.22) and six other throwers also surpassed the required qualification distance of 77.50 m.

Hammer thrower Samantha Borutta from Eintracht Frankfurt also failed to match her best performance this season (72.14 m). With 67.48 m she should not reach a place in the final.

The first World Championship medals are awarded in walking

In walking over 20 km for women (from 10.10 p.m.) and for men (from 0.10 a.m.), the first medals will be awarded in Eugene in the late evening or early morning German time. Saskia Feige from Leipzig and Christopher Linke from SC Potsdam are at the start.

German mixed relay misses 4×400 m final

At the end of the competition day (4.50 a.m.), the final of the 4×400 m mixed relay is about medals – without the DLV quartet. In the preliminary heat, Patrick Schneider (Wattenscheid), Corinna Schwab (Chemnitz), Marvin Schlegel (Chemnitz) and Alica Schmidt (Berlin) did not finish in the top eight in 3:16.80 minutes. “It’s a shame, we had planned more,” said Schwab in the sports show. “The disappointment is great, but we want to attack with the men’s and women’s relays,” said Schlegel, looking straight ahead again right after the race.

The DLV mixed quartet clearly missed the World Cup final.
