Bruce Willis is retiring from acting with immediate effect. His family shared the news on social media on Wednesday (March 30). Numerous colleagues and stars comment and honor the actor for his work and his strength.
Withdrawal due to health problems
The same statement can currently be found on the Instagram channels of Bruce Willis’ daughters Emma, Rumer and Tallulah and his wife Demi Moore: The 67-year-old actor will end his career due to health problems. Cohesively, his family announced he suffered from aphasia and would therefore be quitting “after careful consideration”.
It is unclear exactly what symptoms the “Die Hard” star is suffering from, the post only says that his “cognitive abilities are affected”. Aphasia can manifest itself through damage to the language center in the brain, including problems with finding words and constructing sentences, but also through problems with reading and writing. The triggers in many cases are strokes.
Commenting on the current situation, his closest circle said: “This is a truly difficult time for our family and we are so grateful for your continued love, compassion and support. We’re coming through this as a strong family unit and wanted to include his fans because we know how much he means to you, just as you mean to him.”
Numerous comments express compassion and solidarity
Thousands of comments are collected under the respective posts, in which pity, support and wishes for a betterment are expressed. Countless of them come from fellow actors of the action star, others from fans. Pretty Little Liars producer Marlene King sends Love and Light to Bruce and his family. Tommy Dorfman, known from “Dead Girls Don’t Lie”, expresses his support for the family and star photographer Brian Bowen Smith posts: “He’s done enough. I send you love and light.” Actress Sarah Paulson, who previously starred in the thriller Glass with Bruce Willis, also expresses her sympathy: “He was an incredible acting partner for me and is the most lovable, gentle and funny person that I know.”
Bruce Willis’ colleagues speak out
In individual Twitter posts, colleagues honor the actor for his work and express their affection for him. For example, the 74-year-old actor James Woods, who even goes so far as to say: “Anyone who loves films loves Bruce Willis”. In addition, for him, the actor “embodied everything good about the term “entertainment” over the past decades”.
If you love movies, you love #BruceWillis. He has embodied everything good about the word “entertainment” for decades. Kudos to his loving family for handling difficult news with dignity and grace.
I speak for the world when I say, “We love you, Bruce.” https://t.co/pzVFdFENW2

Director and screenwriter M. Night Shyamalan, who was able to win Willis for several productions (“The Sixth Sense”, “Glass”, “Unbreakable” and “Split”), was particularly affected. In his statement he calls Willis his “big brother” and explains that for him the actor will always be “the hero on the poster in my childhood room”.
All my love and respect to my big brother Bruce Willis. I know his wonderful family is surrounding him with support and strength. He will always be that hero on that poster on my wall as kid.

Even director/actor Kevin Smith, with whom Bruce Willis had some public disagreements in 2010 regarding their 2010 film Cop Out, came out as fans of the actor, writing sympathetically, “He loved acting and singing and the Losing that must be heartbreaking for him.” He felt “like an ass” for his comments about Willis’ behavior at the time.
Long before any of the Cop Out stuff, I was a big Bruce Willis fan – so this is really heartbreaking to read. He loved to act and sing and the loss of that has to be devastating for him. I feel like an asshole for my petty complaints from 2010. So sorry to BW and his family. https://t.co/npSgvkb5v7

Willis recently collaborated with Chad Michael Murray on the action thriller Survive the Night, whose credits include Gilmore Girls and One Tree Hill. In recent years, he says, the retired actor would have gone “from someone I look up to to someone I care about.” He is a “legend” and feels honored to have “established a connection with him”.
Having the chance to create a bond with Bruce these past few years has been an honor. He went from being someone I looked up to, to someone I care about. He’s a legend. His work will continue to live on forever through all of us he’s affected. Thank you for EVERYTHING BW? 2/2
