Stars celebrate fashion at the Met Gala

In bright and glittering gowns and suits, stars like Blake Lively, Jared Leto, Billie Eilish, Kim Kardashian and Sarah Jessica Parker celebrated the opening of an exhibition on American fashion at New York’s Metropolitan Museum. For more than three hours, the stars at the so-called Met Gala on Monday evening walked the red carpet on the steps in front of the Museum in Central Park in Manhattan, in front of which, despite the rainy weather, onlookers had gathered hours earlier. The dress code for the event was “gilded glamor” – as a reference to an economic heyday in the USA at the end of the 19th century.

Often referred to as the “Party of the Year,” the Met Ball is an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute. The income from the Costume Institute Benefit, estimated at several million dollars, forms the annual budget of the institute, which is now named after Vogue boss Anna Wintour. Because of the pandemic, the gala, which traditionally takes place on the first Monday in May, had to be canceled twice in a row and was then finally made up for in September 2021 – for the opening of the fashion exhibition “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”.

With the gala on Monday, the second part of the exhibition – «In America: An Anthology of Fashion». First Lady Jill Biden also watched the show in the morning. (dpa)
