Right before the start of the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, rumors are circulating that a Formula 1 driver could leave the premier class of motorsport to join professional tennis afterwards.
Will there soon be a Formula 1 cockpit available? Lance Stroll is said to be considering leaving Aston Martin. A motorsport connoisseur has published speculation that the Canadian is thinking intensively about switching to tennis.
The presumed reason: Stroll is currently in ninth place in the Formula 1 drivers’ standings and is a whopping 102 points behind his team-mate Fernando Alonso, who is currently third in the overall ranking.
While the veteran, who joined Aston Martin at the beginning of the year and took over from Sebastian Vettel, who stepped down, already has six podiums to his name, Stroll didn’t even come close to the top spots in 2023.
According to Formula 1 connoisseur Ben Anderson, who used to write for “GP Racing” magazine, there have recently been “some rumours” about Stroll’s future, the journalist explained in the F1 podcast of “The Race”.
Formula 1: Stroll has a lifelong contract
The 24-year-old Canadian is well behind Alonso this season, but ditching him from Aston Martin is not an option, Anderson said. Thanks to his father, who owns the team, Stroll has “a contract that is automatically renewed”.
Means: “If so, then Lance Stroll leaves the team on his own.” The insider substantiated with his own information that, from his point of view, this is not entirely unlikely: “There are some rumors that he is thinking about switching to tennis. So if he makes a career switch, the cockpit seat will be free.”
Where exactly Anderson picked up the speculation, he did not reveal. Until now, little was known about Stroll’s passion for the sport of feltball. According to the current status, Stroll’s alleged change of mind should be dismissed as wild rumours.
