StanbyME Go: LG launches televisions in suitcases

A television, a PC monitor, perhaps an oversized tablet? The new screen in LG’s own case raises a few questions. TECHBOOK has the answers.

LG recently introduced the crazy StanbyME Go, now the device is available in the USA for pre-orders open and should be delivered in August. What makes this “television” so special: it comes in its own case, has a touchscreen and an integrated battery. This should offer completely new interaction options – from a movie night out of the trunk to a game session with the family.

The display from the suitcase

LG itself does not describe the StanbyME Go as a television, but as a “portable smart touch screen“. Although the device comes with a 27-inch display with 1080p resolution and 60 Hertz, it is a complete entertainment package including 4-channel speakers with 20 watts, built-in battery and a touchscreen. The whole thing is in a case that can just about be described as portable with dimensions of 62 x 36.1 x 3 cm and a weight of 12.7 kg.

In addition to the screen, the case also contains a classic TV remote control. Contrary to what LG would have us believe, StanbyME Go is actually a TV at heart, albeit heavily customized. The operating system used is not Android, but LG’s own webOS, which also runs on smart TVs. This gives users access to numerous apps and streaming services from Apple, Disney, Netflix, Amazon, Spotify and YouTube. Voice control is also possible and Apple AirPlay is also on board. The smartphone display can therefore be projected onto the big screen.

Portable and versatile

But the functionality goes beyond that of a classic television. The display can be folded out of the case at a 90-degree angle – but it also has a hinge with which it can be continuously adjusted upwards. The screen can be placed in the trunk for a party by the lake, for example, or positioned further up as a more classic monitor for business presentations.

Even a few games – LG shows a family playing chess in the announcement video – are preinstalled on the StanbyME Go. And thanks to an integrated swivel joint, the screen can also be used for social media. In addition, eight “Ambient Themes” are installed, showing a crackling fire or the ocean, for example. For music playback, the display can show a virtual turntable – which, however, looks a bit cheesy, at least on pictures.

Practical companion or more of a party trick?

In addition to the rather high price of 999.99 US dollars (approx. 915 euros, without VAT) for a 27-inch panel with Full HD resolution, the biggest limitation for the portable monitor is the limited battery life. According to LG, the device should last just three hours, and probably even less at full volume. The party in the country is over quickly and even a movie night at the campsite scratches the limit. While LG doesn’t mention it in the spec sheet, the device appears to charge via a USB-C port next to the carrying handle.

For most people, a classic smart TV is therefore the better choice – devices with a better OLED panel, 4K resolution and 55 inch diagonal are already available in this price category. But if you are looking for an extraordinary party trick, the LG StanbyME Go could be interesting for you. TECHBOOK asked LG whether and when the device should also be available in Germany.
