The Municipality of Stadskanaal will receive asylum seekers who can no longer get a bed due to the crowds in the Ter Apel application center. The municipality reports this on Thursday her website† Stadskanaal makes a large tent available to the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) with a hundred beds. This is normally used as a flow-through location.
According to the municipality, it is with regret that asylum seekers from Ter Apel regularly sleep outside or on chairs. Mayor Klaas Sloots calls the situation “degrading”. The conversation with the COA showed that on Thursday there were already people who urgently needed a place to sleep. The first refugees are already sleeping in the transfer location on Thursday night. “Given the situation, it was necessary that we had to switch immediately,” said Sloots.
Two nights in a row, about a hundred asylum seekers had to spend the night on chairs in Ter Apel. There are no beds available for them, so they had to spend the night in the recreation room and the waiting room.
To solve the crisis in Ter Apel, the cabinet wants four large reception locations, each of which can accommodate a thousand people. The NOS and RTL Nieuws reported this on Wednesday on the basis of a letter they saw that State Secretary Eric van den Burg (Asylum, VVD) sent to the Security Council at the beginning of this month.
