The architecturally special World Cup stadium 974 will be used for a different purpose during the soccer tournament in Qatar. As a spokesman for the organizing committee said in response to a “dpa” request, the arena will serve as the venue for the “Qatar Fashion United” fashion show on December 16.
After the round of 16 between Brazil and South Korea last Monday, the last World Cup game in the stadium 974, “first work” has begun to take the arena out of “tournament mode” and give it back to the host country.
The stadium was built from 974 shipping containers, based on the Qatar telephone area code. It is intended to serve as a model, since it required less building material and could be built quickly and allegedly more cost-effectively and then completely dismantled. The arena is to be rebuilt elsewhere – presumably in another country. “The exact schedule for the complete dismantling” is still being determined, said the spokesman.
Last year six games of the Arab Cup took place in Stadium 974, at the World Cup the architecturally unusual arena was the venue for seven games. Leisure and green areas are to be created on the area directly next to the harbor and beach.
