Stadio Milano: why Milan and Inter have chosen to go alone

After the 2018 press release in which the two companies undertook to build the new plant, they finally opted for two different projects

Five years ago everything was different. She pulled a different air, there were other intentions. In 2018, the Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri published a joint press release in which they said they were ready to race together to build the new stadium: “There are various possible options – reads the note – including the restructuring of San Siro. We believe we can conclude this first exploratory phase by the end of 2018”.

scenarios

Today everything has changed. Inter and Milan will go alone: Zhang to Rozzano, Cardinal to San Donato Milanese. Two different areas for two very different projects. But what happened in this time frame? Why did the two companies, once arm in arm to walk together in the construction of a new plant, choose to go it alone? What were the clutches? Certainly the times imposed by law on the Municipality of Milan to grant the definitive yes to the “Cathedral” project – the first presented by both clubs – made the clubs impatient and indirectly cooled the relations between the properties.

old cathedral

The old “Cathedral” project, created by the Populous studio, envisaged a 60,000-seat facility built on two rings (and not three like the Meazza). The masterplan also envisaged five other components in addition to the stadium, i.e. a sports center with affiliated facilities, the tower with offices, a community centre, the Shared street – facade and access portal to the district – and the Cittadella dello Sport, i.e. a building of three levels with commercial, entertainment, sports and museum functions. Initially the division was planned as follows: 68 thousand square meters of commercial area, 9 for entertainment, 21 thousand for tertiary activities, 2.7 thousand for the museum, 1.3 thousand for sports activities, 4 thousand for the congress centre. In the end, a constraint has been placed on San Siro: it will not be demolished. So the two companies started to think they could run on their own. And they did.
