Staatsbosbeheer warns drivers about crossing deer

Staatsbosbeheer warns against crossing deer in nature reserves. The roe deer are in full rut. The males run blindly after the females and can suddenly cross the road.

The nature manager calls on drivers to pay close attention and to moderate the speed in nature and forest areas. It is estimated that there are more than 100,000 deer in the Netherlands. More than 10,000 of these are killed each year. A collision with wildlife can cause major accidents.

The rutting period lasts until about mid-August. Recreational visitors can hear the roe deer during that time. Roe goats make a high-pitched sound when a buck is in sight. Reebok bark when they hear an unfamiliar sound. The bucks are so fixated on females during the rut that they run towards them at great speed.
