VfB offer failed
According to a report by “Sport Bild”, Jakov Medic from FC St. Pauli has aroused interest in Mainz 05 and VfL Bochum. VfB Stuttgart, who are said to have made a concrete offer for the central defender in the past transfer window, are also involved. With his strong development, the Croatian beckons as the most valuable and expensive defensive exit in the club’s history.
The Hamburg-based company was able to reject the alleged 2.5 million euros that the Swabians are said to have offered unsuccessfully for Medic. Medic’s contract at Millerntor is valid until 2024. But that also means that the financial aspect has to move more into focus from now on. However, FC St. Pauli’s past has shown often enough that people in the neighborhood don’t always just look at the dollar when it comes to personnel planning.
The best example is left-back Leart Paqarada, who is leaving the brown-whites for Cologne on a free transfer in the summer after collecting the most points of all second-division full-backs with ten assists and two goals in his previous parade season and being held despite missing out on promotion. Homegrown Finn Ole Becker could also have been sold for money, but was instead available to the FCSP until the end of his contract and then switched to Hoffenheim.
Medic among the most valuable central defenders in St. Pauli’s history
A difference to Medic, however, could be the market value or the financial potential that the massive defensive player would offer. With Medic’s valuation of currently 2 million euros, the shared highest in the squad, and an upward trend since the TM market values were collected, no other central defender from St. Pauli who was not a loan player has been more valuable. Lasse Sobiech made it to that value in 2018, when his free transfer to Cologne was already certain. Between 2010 and 2011 only Carlos Zambrano, who was on loan, was valued higher (€3 million).
If Medic increases his value to this amount by the end of the season, he would be the most valuable departure in the history of the neighborhood club alongside Daniel-Kofi Kyereh, Marvin Ducksch and Ante Budimir. In order for it to become the most expensive, the previous, alleged offer from VfB Stuttgart would have to be supplemented by a further EUR 2 million to EUR 4.5 million.
