St. Pauli breaks the expenditure record: Betim Fazliji comes from FC St. Gallen

Change officially

The change from Betim Fazliji to FC St. Pauli is perfect and ensures a record spending for Hamburg. The defender from FC St. Gallen 1879 signed a contract with the “Kiezkickern” on Friday, but the second division team did not provide any information on the term. According to Transfermarkt information, the fee is 800,000 euros plus bonuses, making Fazliji the fifth most expensive addition to St. Pauli.

The expenses of the brown and white this summer will also increase to 2.85 million euros. St. Pauli has never spent more money on the transfer market in a single season. The previous record of just under EUR 2.5 million came from the 2001/02 Bundesliga season. In the second division comparison, only city rivals HSV invested more with EUR 7.2 million in the current season. This is made possible for St. Pauli by the income from record sales Daniel-Kofi Kyereh (26; for 4.5 million euros to SC Freiburg) and striker Guido Burgstaller (for 500,000 euros to Rapid Vienna).

“Betim fits our requirement profile very well. He can fill various positions in the back four, but also feels at home in defensive midfield. He has steadily improved over the past few years and has been able to gain experience at a high level. We are pleased that we were able to convince him of our path and we trust him to take the next steps in his development,” said sports director Andreas Bornemann.

Change to FC St. Pauli for Fazliji “a big step”

Fazliji, who was able to secure a regular place at FC St. Gallen in his first professional season in 2019/20 and made a total of 97 appearances (five goals) for FCSG, added: “I’m very excited about the new challenge at FC St. Pauli . After eight years in St. Gallen, moving to Hamburg and a new league is a big step for me, but those in charge showed me a very good plan. The active style of play suits me very well. I am now looking forward to becoming part of a young team that loves to play and I would like to contribute to our mutual success as soon as possible.”
