There have been rumors for a long time, now a second season of the Netflix hit series “Squid Game” has been officially announced with two social media posts. The first shows the eyes of Young-hee, a doll that plays an important role in the first season, in which the number “2” appears. The caption reads: “On your marks. Finished. Green light”.
A second post then became a bit more specific. Series executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk made a statement in the post. He writes:
“A new round is coming up. It has taken 12 years to bring the first season of ‘Squid Game’ to life. And it took 12 days for ‘Squid Game’ to become the most popular series on Netflix of all time. As the writer, director and producer of ‘Squid Game’: A big thank you to the fans worldwide. Thanks for watching and liking our show. And now: Gi-hun is coming back. The main character comes back. Season 2 is coming. The man in the suit with ddakji might come back. You will also meet Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su.”
Squid Game tells the story of Gi-hun, a debt-ridden gambling addict who receives a mysterious invitation to gamble for a prize of 45.6 billion South Korean won. He accepts after a moment’s hesitation, only to discover that the games are the extremely violent and deadly versions of South Korean children’s games.
When the series came out in 2021, it was the first series ever to be streamed by over 100 million Netflix accounts within the first four weeks of its release. In addition, “Squid Game” was at times the most watched production in 94 of over 200 countries. So it’s no wonder that Netflix is very interested in a second season of the hit series.
Netflix is currently in a bit of a crisis. After the big boom at the beginning of the corona pandemic, the number of subscribers has recently fallen. The share price of the US company suffered even more. Recently, however, there was also positive news for Netflix: The fourth season of “Stranger Things” was extremely successful.
