7x over 100 million plus
In 2022, FC Bayern is one of the world’s biggest winners in terms of squad value with a plus of 114 million euros, making up four places in an international comparison of the most valuable squads and ending the year behind leaders Manchester City. Thanks to support from Greece and Saudi Arabia, the biggest increases were recorded by Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United, two clubs that were able to draw on unlimited financial resources – as well as FC Barcelona, which had to go “all in” to do so.
Squad value development 2022: Bayern takes 5th place, SBU ahead of Real Madrid in 15th place
The Munich team achieved the plus of 114 million to now 934 million euros thanks to a strong summer of transfers – in which the players who came had a significantly higher market value than those who left – and Jamal Musiala’s rise to the most valuable German footballer.
The Munich side posted the fifth-biggest gain of 2022 despite the departure of Robert Lewandowski, who took his €45m market value to Barça, who rose by €204m to €800m.

Most valuable cadres in the worldTo overview
The foundation of this increase is the activity in the transfer market, which has caused amazement in the football world. “It’s not just Lewy, they’re buying a lot of players – I don’t know how. It’s the only club in the world that doesn’t have any money but buys any player they want,” Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann said in July about the way the heavily indebted Catalans work. So far, the financial tightrope act has gone well in some cases, because in LaLiga they are again ahead of Real Madrid at the top of the table, while they had to say goodbye again from the “premium class” towards the Europa League.
Squad Score winners Newcastle & Nottingham on shopping spree
The fact that Newcastle United is already on course for the Champions League comes as a surprise to many, despite the financial power of the owners. On January 1, 2022, the squad was valued at €221m – eight signings and €237m in expenses later, they are ranked 3rd in the Premier League.
Probably the most important newcomer, however, came on a free transfer and is called Eddie Howe. The fact that Newcastle initially received a refusal from Unai Emery and instead signed Howe to the coaching post, who had been without a club for 15 months, should prove to be a stroke of luck, because money alone is not enough in the richest league in the world to get involved at the top.
This can be seen in the example of Nottingham (+233 to 281 million), whose team after more than 20 signings for 162 million euros no longer has much to do with the promotion heroes of the previous season. Coach Steve Cooper was allowed to stay and although he coaches the team with the highest roster value in the world, he is only 19th in the table – Forest broke the island’s record for most newcomers in one summer.
At the top of the Premier League is Arsenal (€759m), a club whose performance is also reflected in the €197m increase in squad value. Other big winners include AC Milan (+100m to 574m), Stade Rennes (+99m to 318m) and Eintracht Frankfurt (+71m to 270m).
Sevilla & Man United biggest losers – BVB down after Haaland’s departure
With a minus of 135 million euros, Manchester United (731 million) only made it to 2nd place among the biggest squad value losers in 2022, because FC Sevilla (219 million) is in much, much bigger problems than the “Red devils”. The departures of the regular central defenders Jules Koundé and Diego Carlos could not be compensated, the team hangs as LaLiga-18. on the ropes and as a result numerous market values also went downhill – in 2022 there was a minus of 171 million euros or 43.8 percent.
Squad values 2022: BVB, Man United & Juventus among the biggest losers
There was a minus of “only” 60.7 million euros for BVB (519 million euros). The fact that this devaluation was not even higher after Erling Haaland left for Manchester is thanks to big market value winners such as Jude Bellingham and Youssoufa Moukoko. The biggest loser from the Bundesliga is VfL Wolfsburg, which fell by EUR 71 million to EUR 196 million in squad value.
