Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic is also joining the superstar squad of the European tennis team at the Laver Cup in London in September.
The 35-year-old Serb competes alongside Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray in a duel with a world selection, as the organizers announced.
“It’s the only competition where you play in a team with guys you usually play against. Joining me Rafa, Roger and Andy – three of my biggest rivals – is a truly unique moment in our sport,” said Djokovic, who last won his 21st Grand Slam tournament title in Wimbledon.
The quartet has won a total of 66 of the past 76 titles at the four largest tournaments in the world. The 40-year-old Swiss Federer played his last match so far in July 2021, he had his right knee operated on for the third time last August.
Two places are still open in the European team. So far, Felix Auger-Aliassime from Canada, the American Taylor Fritz and Diego Schwartzman from Argentina have been nominated for the world selection. The Laver Cup will take place in London from September 23rd to 25th for the fifth time. Team Europe has won all editions so far. In 2024 the Laver Cup will take place in Berlin.
