Tottenham Hotspur have failed to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. Middlesbrough, which plays at the second level in England, was too strong for the Londoners after extra time: 1-0. Earlier in the evening, Manchester City managed to qualify.
Substitute Josh Coburn scored the liberating goal for Middlesbrough against Spurs in the 107th minute. The attacker got the ball on the side in the penalty area in front of his feet and shot hard diagonally. Tottenham, where Steven Bergwijn came in in the 81st minute, was unable to make up for the deficit in the remainder of the extension. The 25-year-old Dutchman Anfernee Dijksteel had a base place at Middlesbrough.
Manchester City managed to reach the quarter-finals earlier in the evening with some effort. Coach Pep Guardiola’s star team had to visit Peterborough United, the last second level in England. The Championship team lasted for an hour, but then saw Riyad Mahrez score. With that, the resistance was broken. The game ended in 0-2.
Peterborough had had the necessary opportunities when Mahrez completed an individual action and gave his team, with Nathan Ake in the base, the lead. Not much later, Jack Grealish made it 2-0, who cleverly controlled a pass from Phil Foden from behind and then hit the target. Aké had been left behind in the locker room at half time with a yellow card in his pocket.
Ukraine’s Oleksandr Zinchenko wore the captain’s armband at City. That was a tribute to his country, which is under attack by Russian troops.
