Sprint star criticizes sports funding in Germany

Sprinter Alexandra Burghardt has criticized German sports funding.

“The German women’s sprint has rarely had such a good year and nothing will change for us in terms of funding for the next year. In this context, it doesn’t matter whether we won the medals or not. That doesn’t really correspond to a performance principle”, said the 28-year-old in an interview with the media group “Münchner Merkur/tz”.

Burghardt won silver in the bobsleigh at this year’s Olympic Winter Games in Beijing as a brakewoman from pilot Mariama Jamanka. At the World Championships in Athletics in Eugene/USA, she won bronze in the 4×100 meter relay before winning European Championship gold with the German quartet in Munich.

“It is not yet clear whether all training camps can take place as planned next year. It’s a shame when you perform well and are not rewarded for it,” Burghardt continued. “But that’s another topic. You can definitely see that there’s still a lot of work to do.”
