Sprint Olympic champion Thompson-Herah sets world best time of the year

Sprint Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah set a world best time of the year in her first outdoor race of the track and field season.

The 29-year-old Jamaican, who triumphed over both sprint distances in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2021, ran 10.89 seconds in the semifinals of the Golden Games in Walnut, California. She skipped the final, where Twanisha Terry (USA) won in 10.77 seconds, albeit with too much tailwind. The world record has been held by Florence Griffith-Joyner (USA), who died in 1998, with a time of 10.49.

The highlight of the season will take place from July 15th to 24th at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Thompson-Herah has only won gold in the 100m relay at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing. The defending champion is her compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
