Spring is coming

Spring is coming, next month it’s time. The changes in nature are already noticeable. Animals awaken from hibernation and the first buds, leaves and flowers appear.

‘Blue’ forester Peter Bartelds of drinking water company WMD also sees the signs in the water extraction area of which the De Duunsche Landen nature reserve is part.

pollination

“I find this so characteristic in this period, you know that spring is coming. The days are getting longer again,” Bartelds said. He is standing next to a hazel that has no leaves yet but already has catkins. “They release pollen or pollen. The female flowers are bright red and are pollinated by the male catkins. Those become the hazelnuts.”

Edible

“I always think this is a harbinger of spring, celandine. The roots or tubers resemble teats, hence the name. The great thing about celandine is that you can use it in a salad,” says the grounds manager. The plant is common in moist soil and flowers from March to May. “In two or three weeks, when the temperature rises a little further, you will see one yellow sea of flowers.”
