Spotted on the catwalks: Pantone’s colors of the season

This week, the US color institute Pantone presented a trend report for the New York Fashion Week FW23. Cheerful, bright colors such as menthol green and magenta predominate in it. Pantone contrasts the bright color palette with five other muted, classic tones, including deep blue and creamy white.

In the past few days, the first examples of the shades of the Pantone palette have already walked the catwalks during New York Fashion Week. FashionUnited has created an overview of the previous looks.

Ten cheerful colours: from bright magenta to crunchy kohlrabi

Part of the Pantone color selection consists of reds and pinks, including ‘Tender Peach’, a soft, light peachy hue that has graced the catwalks of Tory Burch and Collina Strada, among others.

The more eye-catching shades of fuchsia “Rose Violet” and “Viva Magenta”, named Pantone Color of the Year, have already been picked up by several designers: Dion Lee presented several silhouettes in fuchsia, and Carolina Herrera created a brocade dress, bei in which fuchsia and magenta were juxtaposed in a baroque pattern – with a dazzling result.

Another frequently sighted color was “Red Orange”: Carolina Herrera showed a simple ensemble in this color, and Ulla Johnson played with different shades and textures.

Ulla Johnson also introduced trousers and skirts in “Red Dahlia”, which Pantone describes as an “imposing shade of red”. The US label Puppets and Puppets presented ribbed pants in this color.

“High Visibility”, a warm, cheerful yellow, was also very popular. Carolina Herrera once again opted for a monochromatic look, while Rodarte crafted a spectacular knitted dress that included “High Visibility” as well as other shades of yellow, each in a different yarn type.

Designer Palomo Spain used fashion colors like “Persian Jewel”, menthol green “Carnival Glass” and green “Kohlrabi” in his collection, either solid or in interwoven patterns. Occasionally there was a hint of yellow to be seen as well.

“Burnt Sienna,” a powdery earthy red, dyed a Prabal Gurung dress reminiscent of butterfly wings and a Heron Preston jacket.

Both Heron Preston and Tory Burch designed pants in the color “kohlrabi,” which Pantone says is a “tasteful green,” for Fall 2023. Tory Burch paired the bright green trousers with a jacket in one of the colors from the classic palette: ‘Eclipse’, a deep midnight blue.

The classics: coconut milk and birch grey

The classic color palette from Pantone consists of five colors: In addition to “Eclipse”, it also includes “Coconut Milk”, “Doe”, “Hot Fudge” and “Silver Birch” – a creamy white, a fawn brown, a deep brown and a light silver gray . Reminiscent of a traditional camel color, the fawn was barely seen on the runways. Instead, the most popular was “Eclipse,” which Eckhaus Latta and Proenza Schouler used for subtle, glittery looks.

“Hot Fudge” also made several appearances: at Palomo Spain it appeared in the form of a jacket decorated with rhinestones in other trendy colors, and at Dion Lee as part of an ensemble of a leather bustier and a thin, diaphanous skirt.

Proenza Schouler and Elena Velez chose Coconut Milk and Silver Birch, respectively, both for structured silhouettes with drawstring waists.
