Now Spotify is also drawing the first consequences of the war in Ukraine: The Swedish streaming platform is suspending Russian premium accounts. The decision comes a week after Spotify closed its Moscow office.
As a result of this step, Spotify will lose around 1.5 million subscribers. According to “Metal Hammer”, this shouldn’t affect the service too much. The Russian business accounts for less than 1 percent of the streaming giant’s total income.
“In order to maintain the global flow of information,” Spotify is not completely shutting down its services in Russia. However, the service has already removed all content from the Russian state media Russia Today and Sputnik from its offer.
Spotify isn’t the only company boycotting Russia in response to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. Spotify joins other companies such as Ikea, Disney, Warner Bros., ExxonMobil, General Motors, Apple, BP, Visa, PayPal, Netflix, TikTok, Airbnb, Goldman Sachs, Estée Lauder, H&M, Expedia and Chanel who have their have suspended business in Russia for the time being. Several musicians have canceled upcoming performances and tours in Russia since the beginning of the war.
