Spotify Launches Personal Virtual DJ | Science

Spotify has incorporated an AI DJ into its app. The computer-controlled DJ with an “amazingly realistic” voice draws up a personal setlist based on music taste and listening history. The first version of the brand new feature is available in English for Spotify Premium users in the US and Canada starting yesterday.

“This feature delivers a curated lineup of music with commentary about the songs and artists we think you’ll like, with a stunningly realistic voice,” Spotify said. It sorts through the latest music but also looks back at some old favourites, perhaps even a song that hasn’t been listened to by the user for years, the streaming service says. It then looks at what the person likes and delivers a series of specially chosen songs that are constantly refreshed based on personal feedback.

Spotify has already developed several personalized features, such as automatically generated playlists like ‘Discover Weekly’ or the annual Wrapped campaign. The difference with the virtual DJ lies in the personalization technology, which combines Spotify with generative AI through the use of technology from OpenAI (the company behind the chatbot ChatGPT). Spotify says they’ve put AI technology in the hands of music editors “to provide you with insightful facts about the music, artists or genres you listen to,” the company says.

Realistic voice

“To create the realistic voice model for the DJ, we worked with our own Head of Cultural Partnerships, Xavier “X” Jernigan. X was previously one of the hosts of Spotify’s first (and personalized) morning show, The Get Up,” explains Spotify. His voice is the first model for the DJ, but the company says they continue to innovate.

For now, the feature is only available in Canada and the US. It is not yet known when it would come to other countries.
