For the furious Bundesliga start at VfB Stuttgart, Chris Führich was rewarded with his first international match on Saturday. The Swabians’ sports director, Fabian Wohlgemuth, was extremely satisfied with the performance.
“Chris had some good contact with the ball in the ten minutes of his debut. By the time he came on as a substitute, the game was already essentially decided, but he still fit in well and did a very good job,” the 44-year-old told “kicker”.
Along with Robert Andrich (Bayer Leverkusen) and Kevin Behrens (Union Berlin), Führich was one of three newcomers that national coach Julian Nagelsmann had named in his first squad.
When he came on as a substitute in the 81st minute, he became the first debutant of the new DFB era in Saturday’s 3-1 win against the USA. Andrich and Behrens were not initially used.
Meanwhile, Wohlgemuth watched his protégé’s performance from close up. The VfB sports director and other Bundesliga greats also traveled to the USA during the international trip for a management seminar.
VfB boss sees Führich’s debut in the stadium
Together with Christoph Freund from FC Bayern and Markus Krösche from Eintracht Frankfurt we went to Boston. From there we attended the German national team’s game in nearby Hartford.
Even before the duel with the US boys, Nagelsmann had given special praise to the newcomers. The trio justified the nomination based on their training performance alone.
The former Bayern coach described Führich as a “good one-on-one player” who always acted “very courageously” on the pitch.
It remains to be seen whether the Stuttgart native will be a permanent fixture in Nagelsmann’s squad in the long term. He could collect further points in the second game of the trip to America against Mexico. The game takes place on Wednesday night (2 a.m. German time) in Philadelphia.
