Ralf Kellermann sees the performance of the German team at the European Football Championship in England as a success for VfL Wolfsburg.
“It’s a special situation, and we’re also a bit proud of it. We didn’t expect that a year ago,” said the sporting director of the German women’s champions in view of the ten Wolfsburg women in the squad for Germany’s semi-finalists. Seven currently even belong to the tribe.
With goalkeeper Almuth Schult, who moves to the USA after the European Championship, VfL even has eleven players in the DFB squad. Her successor and competitor Merle Frohms, who is returning to VfL from Eintracht Frankfurt, has yet to concede a goal before the semi-final against France on July 27 (21.00 CEST/ZDF and DAZN) in Milton Keynes.
“I am very pleased that she took this step. She withstood the great pressure of having an Almuth Schult behind her with all her public appeal as a competitor,” said Kellermann. “We will also benefit from Merle’s great performance in Wolfsburg.”
Wolfsburg can also benefit from Lena Oberdorf’s contract extension (until 2025) shortly before the European Championship: The 20-year-old defensive midfielder is one of the strongest in the German team. “She’s still very young, just like Lena Lattwein and, of course, Jule Brand. It can happen that she moves abroad at the age of 24 or 25,” said Kellermann.
